- Encoding. UTF-8 CSV keeps international merchant names and symbols from turning into garbage.
The conversion workflow that imports cleanly

- Review before export. Confirm the statement period, spot-check large transactions against the PDF, and remove duplicates if you merged multiple files.

- Map columns once. Set up the mapping in your GL’s import wizard the first time, then reuse it.
- Verify the import. Check that the opening and closing balances tie out and that the transaction count matches the statement.
Reconciliation is where accuracy pays off
The point of converting isn’t just to get rows in—it is to reconcile without surprises. That means the closing balance in your export must match the statement, debits and credits must carry the right signs, and no transaction can be dropped or duplicated.
